Increasing Visibility & Strengthening Relationships in NZ
Highlights for 2017
2017 was a positive year at FSC in New Zealand for increasing visibility and strengthening stakeholders’ relationship.
New Zealand became the first country in the world to make publicly available a downloadable high-resolution map of FSC certified forests around the country. This voluntary map is a great effort for transparency and has been Internationally commended as best practice.
2017 saw new partnerships formed with a variety of organisations to make FSC more visible. At the B2B level, Masterspec, the biggest NZ specification software in the building industry, has now included an FSC clause to make it easier to specify FSC timber (more information here) and the Sustainable Business Network recommends to use FSC paper in their smart office guide giving tips to create a sustainable office place. At the consumer level, the Wellington Zoo became one of our main advocates, teaching visitors about the importance to buy FSC products to help to protect the animals living in the forests.
This year's biannual Consumer Research results showed an increase in consumers’ awareness with 1 in 3 in New Zealand recognising the label compared to 1 in 5 in 2015*. Seeing the label on a product proved the most commonly effective way to learn about FSC with hygiene products providing the most visibility.
FSC was represented at events in the construction sector including Auckland Build and BuildNZ Designex, presenting to builders, architects and specifiers the benefits of using responsible timber and where to find it.
With the support of Wood Processors Manufacturing Association (WPMA), FSC held the first the Certification Meeting, a discussion group for companies to share ideas, information and have a direct dialogue. This discussion group was particularly useful to progress on the topic of the Centralised National Risk Assessment for sourcing Controlled Wood in New Zealand.
